One can copy a DVD byte by byte via programs like the Linux dd command onto a hard disk, and play the resulting ISO file just as one would play the original DVD. When creating a copy, nothing looks into the transferred file, nor checks if there is any encryption or not, and raw copy is also not aware of any file format. To rip the contents out of a container is different from simply copying the whole container or a file. A rip is the extracted content, in its destination format, along with accompanying files, such as a cue sheet or log file from the ripping software. Ripping is often used to shift formats, and to edit, duplicate or back up media content. Later, the term was used to extract WAV or MP3 format files from digital audio CDs, but got applied as well to extract the contents of any media, most notably DVD and Blu-ray discs.ĭespite the name, neither the media nor the data is damaged after extraction.

Ripping is extracting all or parts of digital contents from a container. Also that would require MLP capable receiver. This article is about copying digital media. So I think tommytinkroom would benefit more going FLAC route than waiting for true DVD-Audio playback that may not ever come and maybe benefit from occasional error correction done in MLP domain. Therefore I advised to rip DVD-Audio to FLAC and use the material digitally with existing Mede8er capabilities and enjoy added benefits of metadata tagging etc.Īnother option would be to hope and wait for Mede8er to implement a true DVD-Audio playback, but I don't think it will ever happen. I don't think HDMI is the main source of data corruption, scratched discs are.Įrror detection and correction can also be done elsewhere in transmission line. Damaged frames can be detected and silenced. I case of MLP it's target usage is in optical discs and therefore strong error detection and correction is preferable.įLAC also has error detection but AFAIK it has no error correction. Sure every lossless codec is doing something different, but the goal is the same. I say they serve the same purpose: lossles audio encoding. MLP in DVD-Audio is just another lossless codec for PCM data very similar to FLAC. I've checked and verified that this way I get lossless playback from Mede8er. When playing FLAC files in Mede8er set it's volume to max (31) this way you'll gel loss less stream because mixer is not altering volume (no gain).

No problems at all and full quality retained! I converted my DVD-Audio this way and I selected stereo tracks in 24bit 96KHz format. Set output to FLAC with max data compression ( Level 8 ) and remove any DSP if you have set them. Select tracks/streams you would like to convert and convert them using foobar2000 built in conversion tool (right click menu).

Install all this software and then you'll be able to decode/play/transcode DVD-Audio discs using foobar2000! foobar2000 plug-in DVD-Audio Decoder and Watermark Detector: Yes your right dvd-audio's did'nt really take off and they have become quite collectable and go for silly money,as for sacd i've just pre ordered America's first album so sacd is still alive and well. So i suppose what i'm listening to off the iso is the basic core non hi res audio. I did rip the iso of the "Yes" dvd-audio and uploaded it to my internal hdd in the 1000x3d and it plays the dts 5.1 layer, which sounds pretty good. But then after inserting the disc in my new Pioneer BDP-450 i noticed it goes into page menu which does't show on the iso in the x3d this hidden menu page shows surround tracks or stereo tracks, when i check display during playback after choosing surround tracks it shows it's playing back MLP. I've only got two dvd-audio's which are "Yes Fragile"and "Ziggy Stardust" the Ziggy disc is'nt a true dvd-audio as it reads back as dvd video only. Hi Thorgal, thanks for the info.Since i wrote my first op i've got my hands on a Pioneer BDP-450 which support sacd
